How does the tax payment work?

The payment of taxes is handled as described in the following cases:

  • Investors residing in Portugal who invest in projects with promoters whose tax residence is in Portugal

In this case, investors do not need to worry about paying taxes or submitting their tax returns to the Portuguese Tax Authority, as Goparity takes responsibility for withholding the taxes and declarating them.

  • Investors residing in Portugal who invest in projects with promoters whose tax residence is not in Portugal

Taxes on the interest earned from a project promoted by a non-Portuguese entity must be paid as income in the country where the entity’s tax residence is located.

In general, no tax is withheld at source. Please check the exceptions here.

In this case, the investor must include Annex J in their IRS Model 3 tax return (the section for income earned abroad), declaring the income from investments made through Goparity when related to promoters who are not residents in Portugal.

In all cases, at the beginning of each yearGoparity provides a detailed income statement for the previous year.
