Sustainable and decentralised production of mushrooms.

Description

Shimejito is an agritech company, which aims to solve a global problem, through the construction of urban greenhouses (the ‘Farms’) for the sustainable production of mushrooms.

With Shimejito, anyone can become a mushroom producer, starting with a 50.000€ investment and guaranteed purchase of the entire production. The funds raised through this campaign will precisely finance a Shimejito Farm, that one of José Atalaia.

The funds raised through this campaign will be used to complement the initial investment for the construction of José’s Farm, including the incorporation of the company, legal advice, training in 4.0 agriculture, adaptation of the Farm’s spaces, purchase of equipment and training of the employees.

The Farms are 70m² and have a production capacity of up to 6 tonnes of exotic mushrooms per year, free from seasonality effects. The process is based on the proprietary technology developed and owned by Shimejito (economic model, decentralized mushroom production model, and IoT control software parameters). Based on the concept of circular economy, the company ensures zero industrial waste production as the substrate used for mushroom production is the same as the one sold to organic farmers.

The customer or producer purchase a service (agriculture as a service) which covers the hardware, software, business plan, sales and production managed by Shimejito, which will ensure the production of mushrooms in a circular economy model. Hence, Shimejito guarantees the construction of the infrastructure, logistics, maintenance, production, and purchase of the product.

The Impact

Shimejito promotes and is based on the 4.0 agriculture production:

  • Efficient use of water: through IoT control, allows for an 80% reduction in the consumption of water, when compared to traditional production;

  • Reduction in CO2 emissions: the carbon particles arising from the agroforestry waste is stored in the soil, thus contributing to reducing CO2 emissions;

  • Zero waste: throughout the entire production, no single-use plastic is used, solely using organic material;

  • Sustainable agricultural production: José’s 70m^2 Farm, after harvesting will have mushrooms and mycelium: the mushroom production is entirely purchased by Shimejito which is responsible for the distribution, while the mycelium will be processed to become a new soil additive;

  • José’s Shimejito Farm will generate two new jobs;

  • Promotion of the circular economy: in its Bio Factory, Shimejito produces mushroom substrate from sawdust, which is sold to the ‘Farms’. It will then be re-collected to be sold on the organic farming market;

  • Promotion of local development: creation of partnerships with local producers and partners aligned with the purpose of regeneration, connecting food networks, research and production. At the same time, the project promoters the training of communities on the same subject.

Financial viability

The 30.550€ loan will complement the 19.450€ investment made by both Shimejito and José Atalaia, totalling the 50.000€ required for the implementation of a farm. The harvest at José’s 70m² farm will be entirely bought by Shimejito.

The Promoter

About Saturnexótico Unipessoal Lda

Shimejito is an Agritech company with social impact, accelerated by BGI/MIT and supported by the Startup Visa program, based in Fundão, elected the number 1 Smart City in Portugal, in 2019.

The company’s mission is to help solve global problems, through local action, by providing consumers with fresh and quality products, and by enabling its investors, such as José, to produce mushrooms in a sustainable and decentralized manner.

Saturnexótico Lda is the company promoting this project, founded by José Atalaia to build and operate a Shimejito farm in the district of Castelo Branco.

José lives in Alcaide, in Fundão, and is passionate about nature and its elements. After getting to know Shimejito at Míscaros festival, the idea was born to take another step in the research of medicinal properties of a wide range of mushroom species, the oldest organism on the planet, through the purchase of a Shimejito mushroom farm.

The Shimejito team currently counts with a team of 12 collaborators.
