Description

RATS & BANANAS is a brand based in Lisbon, inspired by free spirits, where the creative process is focused on the best cut, edgy details, versatility, and comfort. The brand's mission is that whoever uses it feels positive and happy when wearing its pieces.

Created in the midst of the pandemic, in 2020, Rats & Bananas is a small brand where sustainability is a pillar, and the pieces are 100% produced in Portugal. From the optimization of resources to the choice of suppliers, through the selection of raw materials, contributing to a better future is the motto that guides Rats & Bananas' decisions. They bet on the variety of fabrics, details, and patterns, on premium and comfortable materials, and on a limited number of models.

This growing company intends to reinforce marketing via photoshoots and a restructuring of its online platform. It also intends to strengthen the company's physical infrastructure to increase storage and production capacity.

The funds raised through this campaign will be used for:

  • Production of the new collection, photo campaign, and showroom.
  • Acquisition of IT equipment to manage the company (one computer).
  • Website integrations with the carrier and billing services.

  • Job creation: financing the campaign will result in the generation of 1 job at Rats&Bananas.
  • Reuse of textile waste: the company uses, in 60% of its production, fabrics considered dead stock by suppliers - because due to the available quantity can not be used in collections of major brands. This way, Rats & Bananas has already reused around 500 meters of fabrics that would be discarded, contributing to the reduction of textile waste.
  • National production support: all suppliers for the confection of the pieces are Portuguese companies, located in the North of the country. Through its production Rats & Bananas together with 6 national suppliers, supporting the local Portuguese economy.

Indirect

  • Logistical efficiency and smaller carbon footprint: national production represents gains in efficiency and in terms of carbon footprint with the shorter distance for delivery to the company's headquarters in Lisbon. Furthermore, the company recently decided to store stock at the production site itself so that it can be shipped directly from there to customers, avoiding unnecessary transportation and packaging.
  • Promotion of conscious production and consumption: through the reduced number of collections per year, and the production of durable and timelessly designed pieces, Rats & Bananas approaches conscious fashion practices.
  • Female entrepreneurship: Rats & Bananas was founded and is led by Joana Ferraz.

Financial viability

In 2021 the company reached the 40.000€ mark in sales, leading to a very positive net result. In 2022, the projection is to grow 50% in relation to the previous year, accompanied by a surgical investment in marketing, namely in premium photo campaigns and in the restructuring of the website and dissemination actions, as well as in the company's infrastructure with a view to increasing storage, production and response capacity. It is also expected a sustainable growth of the company within 5 years, with a sales plan doubled compared to 2022. The company is expected to achieve a sales volume of over 75.000€ by the end of 3 years, with this figure doubled by the end of the loan.

It is expected that the funds raised in this campaign will increase the production capacity of the company, as well as the demand for products. Thus, the loan shall be paid using proceeds from sales.

The Promoter

About JOANA FERRAZ, LDA

The project was born in 2020, as a result of the vision of its managing partner, who wanted to create a brand sustained by the values that best represent her. Joana Ferraz has the constant ambition to reach a new level in the company's life cycle, to make this national brand of high-quality garments a reference in its sector. RATS & BANANAS is a brand with exclusive patterns and models, designed and created from scratch. From raw materials to production, the entire production process is carried out in Portugal, where the fabrics are carefully selected and of high quality.

Today, the company offers all pieces of clothing, including shirts, pants, shorts, skirts, dresses, and jumpsuits. Its clients have been mostly women who seek identity and exclusivity in clothing, who want to take risks, and who identify with the principles, values, and lifestyle of the brand.

Rats & Bananas is concerned with its environmental and social sustainability, which influences the choice of suppliers, the selection of raw materials, and the versatility of the pieces. Each piece can be worn in several different ways and on several occasions, simply by changing the footwear and accessories.

In order to ensure a regular and quality supply, the company already has a strategically defined portfolio of trusted suppliers, including INPA Confeções Lda; Paula Isabel Confeções Lda; Paula Sol Confeções Lda; Arteba - Armazéns de Tecidos de Barcelos, Lda; Matos e Martinho Lda and Nice World - Comércio Textil Unipessoal Lda. All of them located in the district of Braga, in order to make the logistics fast and flexible.

The physical space of the company is located in front of Lx Factory, in Alcântara, Lisbon where you can find more than 50 stores, restaurants, cafes, and bars. This space is divided between the atelier and the showroom where clients can try the pieces and enjoy the moment to drink coffee or have tea while they get to know the brand better.  


Joana Ferraz, founder and managing partner:

Joana is an entrepreneurial, organized, proactive, and dynamic person with excellent communication skills. With over 15 years of experience in communication, event organization, and fashion, she also has a degree in Psychology and a Course in Styling and Fashion Production, besides other complementary training.

Business Model

At the time of the company's creation, specific objectives were defined, which included increasing production capacity; developing the brand nationally and internationally; developing the e-commerce website; taking advantage of a market with high growth potential; reinforcing differentiating factors, and achieving a good turnover, as well as strong market presence. Joana has dedicated much of her time to the work of promoting and publicizing the company and networking, essential in this type of activity. Wanting to create and consolidate the brand's reputation, future communication strategies have been designed to facilitate this process. Main actions include boosting the Instagram and Facebook page and weekly updates with relevant content (Rats & Bananas social media already has 18.600 followers); a customer database, to send a monthly newsletter; the establishment of partnerships with Influencers; and an e-commerce site where the majority of sales are achieved.

In this sense, the company already has a significant presence in its national market. However, in the short term, it intends to strengthen this position in the national market and begin its process of expansion internationally.
