Opened in May 2017, Quinta Alma is an intimate natural ecological retreat, located 5km from Aljezur, in the Monchique mountains. There, people can enjoy nature, get to know the mountains’ natural cycles, learn about renewable energy systems and observe the local flora and fauna without disturbing the ecological balance. Located in 50 hectares of wildlife, it is an organic farm and a place for experimenting and sharing the experience of permaculture and natural development.

This investment has 6 main goals:

Put up 3 more tents – 2 for 4 people and 1 for 2 people;
Recover the lake area in order to minimize the effects of droughts and create a reservoir in case of mountain fires;
Double the capacity of the current photovoltaic system to 6KWp (currently it is 3KWp) and install a battery bank for self-consumption;
Improve the green spaces in communal areas, creating gardens in the meadows;
Create a 1000m2 biological and pedagogical garden;
Hire a professional in the hotel trade during the Summer season in 2018 and a full-time employee in 2019.

This campaign represents ¾ of the total necessary investment (45.000€). The missing amount (15.000€) will be invested by the partners.

What is the impact?

Direct:

Avoid the emission of around 1,26 tonnes of CO2 per year (adding to what is already produced in clean energy), through the doubling of the clean energy production to 4.870 KWh per year;
Increase in the self-sufficiency capacity from products from the biological vegetable garden;
Increase in the efficiency of resource management with respect to nature – solar energy for water heating and using the surplus from the bathrooms to create an organic compost which will be used as fertilizer in the cultivation of the land;
Recuperation and increase in biodiversity lost due to the drought through the lake restoration;
Increase in the capacity of guests (from 10 to 20) for ecological tourism;
Improvement in the control of the availability of water;
Prevention of forest and mountain fires due to the water reservoir;
Creation of work opportunities.

Indirect:

Promotion and raising awareness of ecological ways of life and ethical tourism;
Promotion of the region;
Raising awareness of a healthy and biological food production;
Raising awareness of the principles of permaculture.

Open since May 2017, Quinta Alma is a cozy ecological retreat in Aljezur. Initially thought of as Nature Tourism and Ecological Glamping, Quinta Alma is deeply committed to a sustainable relationship with the ecosystem. This life project results from the founders' passion - Joana and Mario - and their vision of an inspiring and relaxing experience in Nature. Quinta Alma is independent from the national energy and water networks and is "hidden" just outside Aljezur on the Atlantic coast of the Algarve.
