Ecological retreat with efficient resource management.

Description

Opened in May 2017, Quinta Alma is an intimate natural ecological retreat, located 5km from Aljezur, in the Monchique mountains. There, people can enjoy nature, get to know the mountains’ natural cycles, learn about renewable energy systems and observe the local flora and fauna without disturbing the ecological balance. Located in 50 hectares of wildlife, it is an organic farm and a place for experimenting and sharing the experience of permaculture and natural development.

This investment has 6 main goals:

  • Put up 3 more tents – 2 for 4 people and 1 for 2 people;
  • Recover the lake area in order to minimize the effects of droughts and create a reservoir in case of mountain fires;
  • Double the capacity of the current photovoltaic system to 6KWp (currently it is 3KWp) and install a battery bank for self-consumption;
  • Improve the green spaces in communal areas, creating gardens in the meadows;
  • Create a 1000m2 biological and pedagogical garden;
  • Hire a professional in the hotel trade during the Summer season in 2018 and a full-time employee in 2019.

This campaign represents ¾ of the total necessary investment (45.000€). The missing amount (15.000€) will be invested by the partners.

The Impact

Direct:

  • Avoid the emission of around 1,26 tonnes of CO2 per year (adding to what is already produced in clean energy), through the doubling of the clean energy production to 4.870 KWh per year;
  • Increase in the self-sufficiency capacity from products from the biological vegetable garden;
  • Increase in the efficiency of resource management with respect to nature – solar energy for water heating and using the surplus from the bathrooms to create an organic compost which will be used as fertilizer in the cultivation of the land;
  • Recuperation and increase in biodiversity lost due to the drought through the lake restoration;
  • Increase in the capacity of guests (from 10 to 20) for ecological tourism;
  • Improvement in the control of the availability of water;
  • Prevention of forest and mountain fires due to the water reservoir;
  • Creation of work opportunities.

Indirect:

  • Promotion and raising awareness of ecological ways of life and ethical tourism;
  • Promotion of the region;
  • Raising awareness of a healthy and biological food production;
  • Raising awareness of the principles of permaculture.

Financial viability

In the first year of opening, with only 3 tents (with a total capacity for 10 guests) and with a total of 131 days open, the occupancy rate was greater than 90%. With the increase in the number of tents, the guest capacity will increase by 20, which will, therefore, increase their source of revenue, which they will use to repay the loan.

About ENI Joana Gorjão Rapaz Moreira

Quinta Alma is the brand name of the business managed by Joana Gorjão, an individually owned company officially named Joana Gorjão Rapaz Moreira, ENI

Open since May 2017, Quinta Alma is a cozy ecological retreat in Aljezur. Initially thought of as Nature Tourism and Ecological Glamping, Quinta Alma is deeply committed to a sustainable relationship with the ecosystem. This life project results from the founders' passion - Joana and Mario - and their vision of an inspiring and relaxing experience in Nature. Quinta Alma is independent from the national energy and water networks and is "hidden" just outside Aljezur on the Atlantic coast of the Algarve.

Business Model

The company’s business strategy is based on innovation and the team will continue working to diversify the services provided in the upcoming years, under the trilogy of Agroecology, Tourism, and Regeneration.

Permaculture is the baseline for the promotor's personal and business culture, and the knowledge base that drives the laboratorial agroecological practices. Teaching Permaculture is a strategic part of the company’s service portfolio.

Operationally, Quinta Alma is totally off-grid, with low operational costs for water and electricity. It will remain like this, independent from the utility companies. A strategic positioning and self-sustainability customer reason-to-believe.

Human Resources are of paramount importance for Quinta Alma, they will implement an HR strategy that attracts people that are capable, available, and have diversified skills. The promotor considers that this is crucial to driving the company forward. Quinta Alma will reinforce and balance its present model based on a mix of professional managers, internships, and volunteers.

In the past five years:

  • Over 4000 people have been hosted as guests in Quinta Alma’s shelters.
  • More than 700 volunteers and interns have participated in Quinta Alma’s projects.
  • On a trial basis, three certified courses on Permaculture Design have been taught to over 50 participants. There have also been three group retreats focused on personal development, yoga, and meditation.
  • More than 80% of the eucalyptus trees (along about 10 hectares of the property) have been removed and replaced with native species. More than 60% of the total 45 hectares were cleared from invasive busses to allow soil regeneration and ensure improved fire safety.
  • The existing 25 hectares of medronho trees (arbutus berry) are being densified for commercial purposes, and the promoter planted oaks, cork oaks, and aromatic trees to increase forest yields.
  • A large lake was built to retain and infiltrate the scarce water that comes from the rains into the soil. This lake had visible impacts on the increase and fixation of biodiversity.
