Self-consumption solar energy for a pastry factory.

Description

This campaign aims to fund an energy transition project for the Prazeres da Terra factory in Chaves.

Prazeres da Terra produces, among many other products, the traditional and famous Pasteis de Chaves, with IGP (Protected Geographical Indication).

The project includes a photovoltaic plant for self-consumption, made up of 400 460Wp panels, and will have a power output of 184Kw. The panels will be installed in a "Carport" format, to allow motor vehicles to park in the shade.

The solar panels will be installed and maintained by Ventos e Argumentos, a company specializing in photovoltaic solar installations.

The Impact

Direct

  • Contribution to the decarbonisation of Portugal, avoiding CO2 emissions: With a total production of clean energy of over 248 MWh per year, the solar plant will avoid the emission of more than 34 tonnes of CO2 per year. This is equivalent to the CO2 absorption of 1550 trees.
  • Cost reduction for the end customer: decentralized energy production through renewable sources, close to the place of consumption, helps to avoid distribution costs, this being the most competitive option. In addition, the company's lower dependence on the national grid makes it less vulnerable to price fluctuations and tax charges.
  • Support of electric mobility: through the installation of chargers for electric vehicles, the project supports e-mobility.

Indirect

  • Promoting sustainable business: the project developed for Prazeres da Terra is an example of the applicability of solar power for any business, and in this case serves as a benchmark to similar industries, an important step towards sustainability for businesses in Portugal.
  • Support for the decentralization of investments in Portugal: the city of Chaves, where the installation will happen, in the northern region of Portugal classifies as a less developed region in the country. Thus, sustainable investments in the region are needed to strengthen the economy and the community and prepare it for the future.

The Promoter

About PRAZERES DA TERRA, LDA.

The promoter, PRAZERES DA TERRA is a company founded in 2006 in Chaves, Portugal, driven by the dream and knowledge of its managing partner Jorge Santos. Throughout its almost 20-year history, the project has grown steadily and won several awards and distinctions.

Prazeres da Terra is focused on the production and marketing of regional products, mostly savoury pastries, the most recognized product being the "Pastel de Chaves" with  IGP (Protected Geographical Indication).

The company began its partnership with the SONAE group (one of Portugal's major multinationals) two years ago, selling Pastel de Chaves to Bagga stores. In 2009, due to its growth, Prazeres da Terra moved their headquarters to the Chaves Business Park.

In 2015, Prazeres da Terra was awarded the IGP certification, which acted as a lever to broaden its range of partners and clients, including large groups - such as Pingo Doce, Aldi, Lidl, El Corte Inglês, and Auchan - and references in the restaurant and hotel sector - such as Ibersol, Casa dos Frangos and the Solverde Group.

To mark a closer presence in its host city, Prazeres da Terra opened its store in Rua Maria Rita, in Chaves in 2021. Today, it is a reference point for locals and visitors who want to try Pastel de Chaves or other products produced by Prazeres da Terra and its partner companies.

Committed to innovation, food safety, and sustainability, in 2023 the company began expanding its production unit and acquiring new equipment, as well as launching an app to sell items such as freshly made Pasteis de Chaves, under the motto "Fresh and Good".

Business Model

Prazeres da Terra's main activity is the production, sale and export of regional products, with an emphasis on puff pastry, quiches, Portuguese bolas and folares.

Prazeres da Terra has two distinct lines: Prazeres da Terra and Sr. Pastel, a premium line sold in several stores. In partnerships with large retail groups, Prazeres da Terra also develops tailored product lines.

Orders are received via email or through their platforms, and the products are distributed via a subcontracted transport company. In another segment, customers via the Horeca channel can place their order via email or call, and most deliveries are made by an in-house transport fleet. With the launch of the Prazeres da Terra app, new sales channels emerged, and purchases can be made digitally, requiring only in-store pick-up.

Internationally, Prazeres da Terra has customers in the Netherlands and hopes to cover new markets over the next few years.

When it comes to sourcing raw materials, consumables, and services, Prazeres da Terra prioritizes local or national products and services whenever possible. Many of the partnerships with suppliers and service providers date to the beginning of its activity.
