Books and content to support non-governmental organisations.

Description

The Pequenos Nadas collection focuses on sharing social entrepreneurship projects with a positive impact by publishing and selling books and producing content. Pequenos Nadas sees itself as a partnership promoter between people, companies, local authorities, and NGOs with the ultimate aim of improving the day-to-day lives of as many people as possible in social, environmental, educational, economic, and cultural terms.

This campaign aims to finance projects planned for 2024-2025 to broaden the scope of action in support of NGOs, mainly related to communication and the financing of their projects:

  • development of an online sales platform for NGOs
  • development of their own online charity shop
  • communication and marketing
  • purchasing stock and merchandising for the platform and shop

The Impact

Direct

  • Mobilization of resources for Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs): Pequenos Nadas supports NGOs by publishing books that publicize their activities and whose sales proceeds go entirely to the organizations. With the sale of the books, more than €21,000 has already been raised for the two organizations supported with publications - and there are already 14 editions planned for 2024. At the same time, the online sales platform will enable NGOs to expand their fundraising capacity.
  • Capacity-building for NGOs: through its network of partners, Pequenos Nadas connects NGOs with companies that provide consultancy services with advantageous conditions for training in management, marketing and technology. With this support, organizations improve their organizational and management skills, as well as their capacities and levels of service to their beneficiaries.
  • Raising awareness of sustainable development: the books produced by Pequenos Nadas communicate the activities of NGOs, publicize their projects, and raise civil society's awareness of sustainable development. The books produced are carbon neutral since the emissions resulting from publication are offset with financial support for projects to reduce and mitigate carbon emissions.

By the end of 2023, four editions of books had been produced to support four organizations - of these, two will be published in early 2024. In addition to the money raised, the books publicize the projects in the community, attracting volunteers, patrons, and partners.

Of the 14 books planned for 2024, 6 are bimonthly editions on environmental themes such as biodiversity, water, sustainable art, recycling, sustainable brands, and energy. These editions will be accompanied by actions to raise awareness and engage the community, such as beach clean-ups, reforestation actions, raising awareness in schools, and arranging green spaces in cities.

Indirect

  • Promoting multi-stakeholder partnerships for development: Pequenos Nada interacts with different civil society partners, both in the third sector and in business, to provide comprehensive support to NGOs. They also plan to expand into events and other projects involving more entities from the third sector, business, and local authorities.

Financial viability

The financing is expected to lead to a significant increase in both sales and profits. However, repayment to investors will be ensured by other sources of income, including:

  • Commission paid by NGOs for registering on the platform.
  • Commission on merchandising sold on the platform and margins on products developed by Pequenos Nadas.
  • Book sales (with 16 books already awarded for 2024 and several still to be confirmed).
  • Consultancy, training, and technology services.

The Promoter

About Still in the Clouds, Unipessoal, Lda.

The promoter of this campaign and the company responsible for the pequenos NADAS collection is Still in the Clouds, Unipessoal, Lda.

The pequenos NADAS collection was born in 2013 when its founder, Nuno Oliveira, was a volunteer at ERG (Galiza Rugby School), a project for social inclusion through rugby, located in São João do Estoril. At the time, Portugal was still facing a severe financial crisis and the ERG project was also strugling. To find a co-funding solution, Nuno suggested to the President of Escolinha, Maria Gaivão, that they create a book based on the organisation's history and photographic archive. The sale of this book would make it possible to raise funds and publicise ERG's work over the years. The book ended up having the support of national rugby figures, volunteers, ERG employees, and the players' families.

Guided by the motto "Let's do it!", Catarina Mota, who is involved in various social causes, Lúcia Cruz, who is passionate about writing, and João Mota, who helped with the design, imagery, and layout quickly joined the project and created the book 'The Warriors of Galiza'. This first book was followed by the collection Pequenos Nadas.

The promoter is based in Lisbon and has 12 employees working in project coordination, editorial coordination, copywriting, proofreading, design, translation, photography, illustration, and IT.

In the future, the promoter intends to position itself as one of Portugal's main communication agencies for the third sector, expand the type of books published (keeping a social or environmental focus), raise the number of digital transformation projects for NGOs, and provide support to third sector organisations in applying for funding and grants.

Pequenos Nadas also plans to develop its skills in the production of events, social quizzes, and solidarity tournaments, as well as promoting photo competitions exhibitions, and other initiatives such as meeting spaces and support for young creators.

The promoter is currently developing their new website - https://pequenosnadas.com/ - which will be online after January 10, 2024.

Business Model

The promoter's main activity is publishing books focussing on social and environmental issues, either by specialized authors or collaborative works about institutions and companies. At the moment, Pequenos Nadas has 16 books already contracted for 2024. In addition, the promoter offers consultancy, training, and technology services to third-sector organisations and expects to benefit from commissions associated with the use of its online platform, the purchase and sale of promotional products for NGOs, and the representation of various brands from partner organizations (Upndo, Mais meios, KW, UpSideUp).

The books are sold mainly in traditional bookshops, online shops, and in other book-selling locations. Pequenos Nadas' website and social media channels will also be future points of sale, as well as the physical stores, websites, and social media pages of their partner NGO and donor organisations.

The promoters' clients typically include the community surrounding the NGO, the local population in the area where the projects are implemented, the general public who identify with the project cause, and those who recognise the importance of the third sector in society.

In the future, Pequenos Nadas hopes to export the concept, which they consider replicable, and the books (translated into English), to implement the project in other countries.

To date, the main sources of funding have been equity, with careful cost management. The plans to increase the range of products and services lead the promoter to seek new sources of funding.
