In Costa Vicentina (Portugal’s Alentejo coastline), nested in the peace of the surrounding mountains and located 10 minutes away from the bustling ocean waves, is Monte do Galo, an estate with 20 hectares and two two-bedroom houses, at the disposal of the most demanding guests who seek a sustainable destination. It is expected to open to the public on July 1st 2021.

The project is guided by principles of sustainability in all its dimensions: construction, design, energy, water management, forestry management, consumption, waste, and displacement.
The aim of this campaign is to finance a solar power plant for self-consumption with 7,2 kWp, which will allow the two houses to be self-sufficient in energy.
The plants will produce an average of 13,8 MWh of clean energy per year, contributing to avoiding the emission of 2,8 tonnes of CO2 per year, the equivalent to the absorption capacity of 127 trees.

The panels will completely eliminate the costs associated with the consumption of energy. They will also allow Monte do Galo to position itself as a model sustainable destination.
Aljezur is the region of Portugal where vacation rentals have the highest profitability, according to data provided by Airbnb. From 2022 onwards and following a conservative model, the project will be able to produce € 15,000 in net revenue, and growing at a rate of 12% per year in the following 5 years.
Without any form of communication, Monte do Galo has received booking requests which will, at this point, ensure an occupancy rate above 50% for the high season (from July to September 2021).

The solar equipment will be pledged.

In 2014, having fallen in love with the location as soon as they saw it, João and Joana decided to create Monte do Galo. The idyllical scenario captured their attention as they idealized a project which would increase the value of the land, where cork-oaks and arbutuses are crossed through by the stream that leads Monchique’s water to Aljezur.
In 2017 they founded Funkybio, a biological supermarket in Porto tas was sold in 2019. Since then, they have been devoted to Monte do Galo, which seven years later will finally be up and running.
Both believe that the vernacular architecture set in this environmental and social context, which respects the cultural traditions, is part of the concept of sustainability.
João is a graduate in engineering and industrial management, and mastered in innovation and technology entrepreneurship. He worked for more than 10 years as an industrial engineer on constant improvement projects and as Director of Operations. He is currently dedicated to both Monte do Galo and sustainble consulting at the company he founded in 2019, HumbConsulting.
Joana is a graduate in international relations and a postgraduate in NGO management, having always lived between the non-profit sector, in project management, volunteering and activismo; and the profit sector, in administration, operational management and institutional representation. In 2019, Joana founded Retiros da Lua - a women’s health education and healthy lifestyles project.
They started the project in 2014 not only because of the emotional link to the site, but also because of the great potential they saw there. At the time, the land’s selling price was low and in addition to this, Aljezur is an unmissable tourism destination given its unique characteristics in Europe: climate, surf, wilf beaches, natural park and nature preservation. Between the architecture projects and the red tape, the recovery of the old ruin only started in 2018 and is being built in respect of the slow-pace algarvian rhythm.
Monte do Galo will offer its guests a unique experience of conscious tourism, in total connection with nature, which combines ecology, with the high quality of their housing and services.
Monte do Galo’s offer is made up of two two-bedroom houses (suite) with 80m^2 each, which will target a premium market. In 2021, they expect an average occupancy rate of around 40%, given that, without any form of communication, they are already at 50% occupancy rate for the high season. From a conservative perspective, the promoter expects to have a revenue of € 15,000 in 2021, increasing to € 25,000 in 2022, followed by a 12% annual growth from 2023 to 2027. Services will include breakfast, take-out lunch, daily cleaning, and leisure activities. During the low season, Monte do Galo intends to run nature retreats led by Joana, and corporate sustainability workshops carried out by João. The promoter also predicts an extra € 5,000 annual income raised through the forestry exploitation, mainly from the 5 hectares of arbutus.
