Solar energy for self-consumption in an Intermarche franchise supermarket.
Description
The goal of this campaign is to fund a PV solar central in Distrifelguereiras, Lda., a franchise supermarket, part of the French Group Intermarché, with a local independent organizational structure aligned with the strategic values of the brand. Luz Verde, the project promoter, will install, own, and operate the PV solar central, in an ESCO model. This is the promoter’s fifth campaign with GoParity.
The panels are being installed on the parking lot coverage structure of the supermarket with 2.644m2, which will also be owned and operated by LuzVerde as part of this project. The central will have over 650 solar panels, with a total power of 188,5 kW, combining the benefits of customer comfort with the supermarket’s vision of sustainability and self-sufficiency.
The Impact
- Reduced dependence on carbon-based fuels, avoiding the emission of CO2: with an estimated annual production of 344,9 MWh, the photovoltaic system will avoid the emission of 70 tons of CO2, the equivalent to planting 3.182 trees.
- Cost reduction for the end client: decentralized electricity production, near the consumption location, reduces the distribution costs making the option for renewable energy more cost-competitive than the national grid. Also, the decreased dependence on the national grid, makes the company less vulnerable to price fluctuations.
Moreover, for each developed project, the promoter will take one of the two following initiatives, according to its environmental policy:
- Donate 10€ for each kW of green energy installed to a non-profit organization.
- Plant a tree for each kW of green energy installed.

Financial viability
During the first 84 months (7 years), LuzVerde will be renting the photovoltaic power plant for a variable rent indexed to the expected production of the central (3 161,90€). After that period, Distrifelgueiras can acquire the central for € 6 323,80. During the first 84 months, the structure presents a cost to the supermarket, due to the car park shadow structure. After acquiring the central, it will save €3.196,98 a month on electricity bills.

About Frontrow Lda
LuzVerde (Frontrow Lda) is part of a group with over ten years of experience providing energy services. Based in Northern Portugal, its main activity is to develop solar energy solutions for self-consumption for household, industry, and commerce. The company provides the following services:
- Technical evaluations to measure the estimated energy consumption of the contractor and to evaluate the characteristics of the location where the plants will be installed.
- Installation of the photovoltaic panels.
- Help with the licensing and certification processes.
- Monitoring, maintenance, and operation after the installation in order to guarantee that the panels are kept at the highest production capacity possible.
- Support the project financing.

Business Model
The promoter’s main activity is to develop solar energy projects. The finance model of these contracts is based on an initial investment made by the energy service company (ESC) – in this case, Luz Verde. The remuneration consists of the positive difference between the estimated energy savings and the effective energy savings. Therefore, in this model, the contracting entity is reassured that its energy costs will be lower than what would happen in normal circumstances. This means that the impact on its budget is always positive, once the ESE assumes the risk for the payment of any costs that exceed what was initially contracted.
