Solar energy for self-consumption in social institutions.

Description

OutConsulting aims to raise 78.000€ to finance the installation of two photovoltaic plants for self-consumption in two social institutions belonging to Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Serpa, a city in the interior of Portugal.

The power plants will both have 50kW and the following characteristics:

  • Lar de São Francisco (elderly home): annual production of 78,4MWh, 95% for self-consumption, covering around 27% of the entity's energy consumption needs. The remaining production (4MWh) will be sold to the grid.
  • Integrated Continued Care Unit (UCCI) Guadalupe (long-term care unit for the elderly): annual production of 69,8MWh, 91% for self-consumption, covering around 28% of its energy requirements. The remaining production (6MWh) will be sold to the grid.

The Lar de São Francisco is home to more than 100 users aged over 65 whose housing, economic, health and caregivers' abilities do not allow them to remain at home. This social response makes it possible to provide a range of services that satisfy the needs of the users in terms of lodging, food, clothes treatment, daily hygiene and image care, medication administration, medical assistance and nursing care, socio-cultural and sports animation, physiotherapy, among others.

The UCCI Guadalupe integrates a rehabilitation unit and a long-term unit. In the space, there is a day centre and a clinic for treatment and speciality consultations.

The Impact

  • Contribution to the decarbonisation of the economy, avoiding the emission of CO2: with an estimated clean energy production of 148,2MWh per year (78,4MWh/year + 69,8MWh/year), the solar power plants will avoid the emission of 24,2 tonnes of CO2 per year, the equivalent to planting 1.100 trees. This implies a reduction on consumption from the grid of around 30%.
  • Cost reduction for the end customer: the decentralised production of electricity using renewables, close to the place of consumption, makes it possible to avoid distribution costs, making this option more competitive than the energy supplied by the network. In addition, reducing the company's dependence on the grid makes it less vulnerable to price fluctuations and tax charges.

Financial viability

The project is aligned under the energy-saving model, in which the company is able to pay the instalments of the loan given with the proceeds resulting from the energy savings generated from the switch to solar energy.

In the first 10 years, the solar panels belong to the installer and the user pays a fee for their rent. After the 10th year, the user becomes the owner of the panels and starts enjoying the full savings from the decrease in cost in energy consumption.

Around 93,7% of the energy produced will be consumed locally, which demonstrates the project's robustness.

The project has been successfully implemented while payments are ongoing

The solar energy systems have been successfully installed by OutConsulting for the self-consumption of two social institutions belonging to Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Serpa, a city in the interior of Portugal.

The solar systems cover roughly one-third of the institutions energy consumption needs, which allow the institutions to focus their resources on the services they offer to the elderly home and long-term care unit.
