e-mpact is a new brand of electric bicycles focused on the importance of promoting sustainable urban mobility. But what sets this project apart is its aim to create the electric bicycle with the least environmental impact (in its supply chain).

The first e-mpact bike - the PR1 - was officially launched at Eurobike in Frankfurt in June this year.

The brand now wants to produce its first 25-30 bikes. This campaign aims to finance orders from suppliers so that e-mpact can begin its market strategy. The funds will be used for:

Scale purchases of components and manufacture of the frames, in order to optimize the cost of acquisition;
Producing prototypes and conducting tests of the brand's second model;
Website development and promotion costs.

After receiving the equipment from the suppliers, production of the bikes will be finalized and they will be sold through various marketplace channels already set up by the company.

What is the impact?

Direct

Promotion of sustainable industrialization: with the funding, E-mpact can place orders with its suppliers for the production of the first units of bikes, which will be assembled in Aveiro in the north of Portugal – while this funding will enable the production of around 30 bikes, the company’s goal is to reach 300 units produced in the first 3 years. The company prioritizes bike components made in Europe, and most are produced in Portugal, while some come from Spain. E-mpact main production partners are Reynolds Technology and Mahle, which have responsible value chains in place.

Promotion of innovation and entrepreneurship: a part of the grant will be used to further research and development for innovation with the goal of putting in the market a product that improves urban mobility while contributing to better air quality and lower environmental impact production.
Promotion of accessible and sustainable urban mobility with lower environmental impact: with the use of a technology that records the production’s CO2 emissions and measures in real-time the emissions avoided by the time of cycling, the E-mpact bike contributes to accelerate carbon neutrality. The technology works through managing the life cycle of the product through a digital passport – a digital repository of information about the bike, insurance, warranties and maintenance.

Mind Over Body, Unipessoal LDA (M.O.B) is a Portuguese company founded in 2016 in Coimbra, which created the e-mpact brand.

The company is 100% owned by Paulo Fernando Monteiro Rodrigues, who has a long career in the bicycle sector. Paulos has participated in several national and European projects related to two-wheel shared mobility, such as the GIRA bicycles in Lisbon (Lisbon's city bikes).

M.O.B. has a team of 6 specialists in related areas such as transport and mobility, sustainable solutions (mobility impact), development and procurement of e-mpact has developed an electric bicycle model that they want to be "the bicycle with the lowest environmental impact on the market".

The various components of the bike, from the frame to the batteries and other equipment, have been chosen and optimized to maximize performance and comfort and reduce the environmental footprint of production, as well as costs.
