Founded in 1954 by a group of 100 winegrowers, ADEGA COOPERATIVA DE CANTANHEDE, C.R.L. is a Portuguese cooperative company dedicated to the processing, production, and marketing of wines and related products derived from the vineyards of its members.
Operating in the agri-food and beverage sector, the cooperative focuses on the production, certification, and commercialization of wines and related products. Today, it brings together more than 500 active winegrower members and processes between 6 to 7 million kilos of grapes annually, positioning itself as the leading producer in the Bairrada Demarcated Region, responsible for approximately 40% of the region’s total production. Around 80% of its output is certified, and Adega de Cantanhede maintains leadership in sales of DOC Bairrada and IGP Beira Atlântico wines.
One of the cooperative’s core values is the promotion of Portuguese native grape varieties, particularly the traditional varieties of the Bairrada region — Baga, Bical, and Maria Gomes — alongside other national varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Aragonez, and Arinto. Its portfolio includes a wide range of red, white, and rosé wines, from entry-level to premium categories, as well as an extensive selection of sparkling wines produced by the traditional method, spirits, and fortified wines. Adega’s products are currently distributed in more than 20 international markets.
The cooperative has earned more than 750 awards in prestigious national and international competitions, including Mundus Vini (Germany), Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, Sélections Mondiales des Vins (Canada), Effervescents du Monde (France), Berliner Wein Trophy (Germany), and Japan Wine Challenge.

ADEGA COOPERATIVA DE CANTANHEDE CRL is organized and operates as a cooperative entity. The ownership of the cooperative is collectively held by its members, who exercise control through a democratic governance structure.
The Cantanhede Wine Cooperative bases its business model on the production and commercialisation of wines made from grapes supplied by its members, ensuring scale, quality, and market capacity for small and medium local winegrowers. The cooperative centralises reception, winemaking, ageing, bottling, and distribution, which allows for reduced individual costs and increased added value of the products. It focuses on certified wines from the Bairrada and Beira Atlântico regions, invests in its own brands, exports, and wine tourism, reinvesting the results in technological modernisation and in enhancing the value of the producers.
