Profitable green urban areas with biotech

Description

Bioo is a Spanish biotechnology company that develops technologies to make urban green spaces more efficient. Its systems are installed under gardens, parks, and rooftops, where they generate electricity from the soil, reduce water usage, and help cool the surrounding environment.

This campaign seeks to finance the implementation of Bioo’s current projects with signed clients in Europe, Asia, and America. The capital raised will work as an advance payment on a confirmed 8 million euro equity round, with 5,5 million euro expected to be disbursed by the end of September 2025.

While this campaign addresses short-term working capital needs, the broader equity round is focused on growth. The investment will support increased production capacity, strengthen the sales and marketing team, and continue developing Bioo’s core technologies. Part of the R&D efforts are co-funded by European Union innovation programmes and aim to improve the performance and scalability of the company’s biological systems.

Bioo’s technologies use natural biological processes to generate electricity and manage water in green spaces. Microorganisms in the soil break down organic matter, releasing electrons that are captured to produce energy. In some systems, substrates also help generate water by releasing hydrogen, which combines with oxygen in the air.

By transforming how cities interact with nature, Bioo aims to help shape a more resilient and regenerative urban future.

The Impact

  • Promotion of innovation in urban landscapes: Bioo is a biotechnology company focused in developing cutting edge green energy solutions - like Microbial fuel cells - and rethinking how cityscapes are designed with the goal of creating urban spaces that are fully energy sufficient. Bioo’s integrated systems deliver a range of environmental benefits, including:
    • Clean, renewable energy generation
    • Significant CO₂ reduction
    • Lower irrigation costs
    • Improved temperature regulation in urban areas

With the support of this working capital financing, Bioo plans to install 461.000 BIOO Panels (Biological battery using MFC) across 115.000 m² in upcoming projects. In a year span, these projects are expected to generate over 8,760 kWh of green electricity, reduce 926 tonnes of CO₂, and save up to 126 million liters of water.

  • Improving renewable energy production: One of the company’s products, the BIOO Panel, is a new Microbial fuel cells (MFCs)  concept. This unique power source is intended to provide sustainable energy for LED lighting in parks and gardens. MFCs are non-combustive devices providing electrical energy using microorganisms as biocatalysts and organic materials as substrate – or food for the microorganisms.  As these living microbes metabolize the substrate, chemical energy is converted into useable electrical energy. In a 49 m² area (with four BIOO Panels per square meter), this system can generate 15 Wh/day and store more than 16kg of CO2.
  • Reduction and more efficient use of water resources: The landscapes designed by Bioo can achieve water savings of up to 48%. This is due to the:
    • Water generating capacity of the Microbial fuel cells,
    • Efficiency of the drip irrigation system,
    • And finally the rain water storage capacity of the Bioo panel.
  • Improving global resources use efficiency in consumption and production: A comprehensive life-cycle assessment of the BIOO Panel—which accounts for environmental impact at every stage of its implementation—shows that the system reaches carbon neutrality after 7 years of operation (with a forecasted working durability of 80 years). One of the biggest contributing factors to the low carbon footprint of the Bioo panel is the fact that all the polymeric materials involved in the production of the system are from recycled material, implying a carbon-neutral production of the case and its internal components.
  • Contribution to the decarbonisation of urban spaces, avoiding CO2 emissions: Bioo’s solutions help lower the carbon footprint of urban environments through three key mechanisms:
    • CO₂ absorption by vegetation integrated into the landscape,
    • Carbon capture and storage in materials such as graphite, derived from atmospheric CO₂,
    • Avoided emissions by replacing conventional fossil fuels with renewable energy generated on-site.

Financial viability

The capital raised will serve as a bridge loan, to be repaid using proceeds from an 8 million euro equity round, with 5,5 million euro expected to be disbursed by the end of September 2025.

This project has a minimum target of 400.000,00€.

As stated in Part B of the KIIS document (Key Investment Information Sheet), the minimum targeted loan amount is 400.000,00€, this means the funding campaign can close with any amount between 400.000,00€ and 500.000,00€ on the end date.

About ARKYNE TCHNOLOGIES SL

Bioo, whose legal entity is ARKYNE TCHNOLOGIES SL, is a Spanish biotechnology company based in Barcelona, established in 2015 by Pablo Vidarte, an entrepreneur recognized in Forbes' 30 Under 30 list. He founded the company with the mission of transforming how cities and agricultural environments function by integrating living systems into the built world.

Bioo develops technologies that embed biological processes into urban and agricultural infrastructure, turning green spaces into active systems that generate electricity, reduce water use, lower temperatures, and absorb CO₂.

The company’s main product is the Bioo Panel, a biological battery that produces electricity from soil. It works by capturing electrons released by microorganisms as they break down organic matter, converting this into usable energy. In addition to generating power, the panels help reduce irrigation needs, regulate temperature at the root level, and support carbon absorption.

The company has also developed other technologies, including bioluminescent systems that emit light through living plants, biological switches activated by touch, and liquid tree systems designed for urban environments. These solutions are typically installed in parks, rooftops, walkways, and other green infrastructure.

Bioo’s technologies have been implemented in projects across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, including large-scale developments such as NEOM in Saudi Arabia. The company has received international recognition for its work, including awards from the European Parliament and Google.

Bioo has 4 patents, demonstrating proprietary innovation, and their protected competitive advantage:

  • Device and Method for Generating Electrical Energy - using organic matter and microorganisms to produce a stable electron flow through a bio-electrochemical process.
  • Detection module, interface systems and method for detecting interactions of a user with a living plant and communicating control signals - identifying capacitance variations in a plant using electrodes, capacitive sensors, and a control unit that processes voltage data, compares it to a threshold adjustable via a user-accessible potentiometer, and sends control signals to external devices when the threshold is exceeded.
  • Device for producing energy and use thereof - new double-compartment underground device that enhances energy stability, durability, and protection from environmental and biological factors.
  • Lamp with organic switch - a lamp integrated into a plant pot containing a live plant, where touching the plant acts as an organic switch that triggers a control unit, connected to a conductive electrode and light emitter, to turn the light on or off, all housed within a concealed structure for a simple, low-cost, and environmentally friendly lighting solution.

Business Model

Bioo operates a B2B business model focused on the design and distribution of biotechnological systems for green infrastructure.

The company sells its products through a network of certified distributors. These distributors are typically companies that install and maintain green areas, such as parks, rooftops, and vertical gardens. Before becoming certified, they complete a one-week training provided by Bioo, which includes a pilot installation and commercial onboarding.

Bioo subcontracts manufacturing and oversees installations to ensure quality and consistency. After installation, clients pay an annual maintenance fee, typically set at 15% of the product’s fixed cost. This service includes system monitoring and performance optimisation, creating a recurring revenue stream for the company.

For large-scale projects, Bioo works directly with clients and coordinates execution by dividing the site into zones and assigning them to different certified distributors. This decentralised approach allows the company to scale operations while maintaining local implementation capacity.

In addition to product sales and maintenance, Bioo generates revenue through training, impact analysis, and design services for biotech landscaping and indoor environments.
