The history of Vinhos Damasceno begins in 1870 in the town of Poceirão, Palmela with the birth of Domingos Damasceno de Carvalho, who would later name the wines.
In 2013, the first harvest of bottled wine under the IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) and DO (Name of Origin Denomination) labels takes place, under the Damasceno brand, following the capital injection by the project’s promoter, Financipe.
Currently, the company operates in their three properties with 25 hectares of vineyards between Palmela and Pegões, in the region of the Setúbal Peninsula. 2021 will be an important year as the company will start exploring another 20 hectares, to acquire them on a lease basis, in order to increase grape production for the production of common wines and, consequently, increase its turnover.
All production is done in an integrated production regime, based on good agricultural practices and the rational management of natural resources.
This is the promoters second campaign with Goparity, having previously raised 25.000€ through a treasury loan.
The company produces about 300 tons of grape in the 23 hectares it currently explores. Of these, only 20% is used for its own production, with the surplus grapes being sold to other wine producers, the most relevant being Casa Ermelinda Freitas.
2021 will be an important year for the company as it will start cultivating an additional 45 hectares, which it will lease, and which will start producing vines for common wine within three years, ultimately significantly increasing the company’s business.
The promoter will hence go from 23 to 68 hectares of land explored, with 18 hectares reconverted in April 2022, and which will start producing three years following the replacement of the vineyards, the cost of which is fully supported by the promoter.
The remaining 50 hectares are already producing vines and Vinhos Damasceno’s first harvest will take place next year. This project has an overall investment of 300.000€.

The funds raised through this campaign will be used to co-finance a new winery, a total phased investment of 450.000€. In addition to the loan obtained through Goparity, the company has submitted an application to the Portugal 2020 incentive programe, which is pending approval. The remaining funds will be invested with the company's own capital.
The first phase, which requires an investment of 132.000€, will be dedicated to the acquisition of equipment.

The history of Damasceno Wines began over a century ago when farmer Domingos Carvalho settled in the town of Poceirão, in the region of Setúbal, and built a 600-hectare estate called Herdade dos Carvalho's, where he planted vineyards to extract the best wine from the sandy soils.
In 2003, for the first time, the harvest was bottled under the designation of Domingos Damasceno de Carvalho, and the wines were sold in bulk until then.
In 2012, after capital injection from Finance, the project promoter, the brand was reborn with a new image, new investment, and a strong commitment to growing a business with history in one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal. Currently, the company owns the brands of the “Damasceno” universe, all activity is concentrated there and it is through it that it is expected to increase the production capacity of grapes and wine (in bulk and bottled).
It is also since that time that winemaker António Saramago ensures the quality of wines in the cellar with the latest technology.
In the 23 hectares of vineyards, in addition to the most traditional varieties in the region, such as Moscatel, Moscatel Roxo, and Castelão, the promoter has his own production of red grapes such as Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet, and Merlot. In white grape varieties, it produces Chardonnay, Antão Vaz, Arinto, Fernão Pires, Verdelho, and Viognier.
In the 20 hectares that will be explored from 2021, priority will be given to the planting of national varieties.
Annually, the company produces about 300 tons of quality grapes. Part of this production is intended for the production of own wine that is sold under the brands Nocturno (entry range), Damasceno (premium) and, more recently, D. Pedro V (super-premium). The surplus of the grape is sold to other wine producers, namely Casa Ermelinda Freitas.
In 2018, only 30% of the grapes produced were vinified, which gives the promoter enormous growth and security potential for the future development of the company.
Portugal is the most relevant market, absorbing 60% of production, and in recent years, the bet on internationalization has been very successful, with Dubai and Denmark representing the main export markets. Additionally, the company also exports to Switzerland, the Netherlands, Japan, Brazil, Germany, the United Kingdom and China.
The company's growth has been based on niche markets - wine cellars and the Horeca channel - to the detriment of Large Distribution.
