Ecological retreat with efficient resource management that respects nature in Portugal.

Impact

Seeking to minimize its ecological footprint in all aspects, the Quinta Alma project will have the following direct impacts:

  • Avoid the emission of around 1,26 tonnes of CO2 per year (adding to what is already produced in clean energy), through the doubling of the clean energy production to 4.870 KWh per year;

  • Increase in the self-sufficiency capacity from products from the biological vegetable garden;

  • Increase in the efficiency of resource management with respect to nature – solar energy for water heating and using the surplus from the bathrooms to create an organic compost which will be used as fertilizer in the cultivation of the land;

  • Recuperation and increase in biodiversity lost due to the drought through the lake restoration;

  • Increase in the capacity of guests (from 10 to 20) for ecological tourism;

  • Improvement in the control of the availability of water;

  • Prevention of forest and mountain fires due to the water reservoir;

  • Creation of work opportunities.

As well as this, there will also be these indirect impacts:

  • Promotion and raising awareness of ecological ways of life and ethical tourism;

  • Promotion of the region;

  • Raising awareness of a healthy and biological food production;

  • Raising awareness of the principles of permaculture.

Project Information

Opened in May 2017, Quinta Alma is an intimate natural ecological retreat, located 5km from Aljezur, in the Monchique mountains. There, people can enjoy nature, get to know the mountains’ natural cycles, learn about renewable energy systems and observe the local flora and fauna without disturbing the ecological balance. Located in 50 hectares of wildlife, it is an organic farm and a place for experimenting and sharing the experience of permaculture and natural development.

This investment has 6 main goals:

  • Put up 3 more tents – 2 for 4 people and 1 for 2 people;

  • Recover the lake area in order to minimize the effects of droughts and create a reservoir in case of mountain fires;

  • Double the capacity of the current photovoltaic system to 6KWp (currently it is 3KWp) and install a battery bank for self-consumption;

  • Improve the green spaces in communal areas, creating gardens in the meadows;

  • Create a 1000m2 biological and pedagogical garden;

  • Hire a professional in the hotel trade during the Summer season in 2018 and a full time employee in 2019.

This campaign represents ¾ of the total necessary investment (45.000€). The missing amount (15.000€) will be invested by the partners.

Financial Viability

In the first year of opening, with only 3 tents (with a total capacity for 10 guests) and with a total of 131 days open, the occupancy rate was greater than 90%. With the increase in the number of tents, the guest capacity will increase by 20, which will, therefore, increase their source of revenue, which they will use to repay the loan.

About ENI Joana Gorjão Rapaz Moreira

Joana and Mario created Quinta Alma in 2017. This project is the result of their passion and vision for an inspiring and relaxing experience in nature. They believe that nature is the best place to relax, reflect and be inspired so they created a different space with a profound connection to nature, hidden in the Monchique mountains, near Aljezur, in the Algarve, in 50 hectares of wildlife. Quinta Alma is a magical place, totally off grid (autonomous in energy terms due to the production of solar energy and water coming from a mine located within their land) for those who want to have a close yet comfortable experience of living alongside nature. At Quinta Alma, guests can enjoy nature, get to know the natural cycles of the mountain, learn about renewable energy and observe the local flora and fauna without disturbing the ecological balance. Joana, entrepreneur by nature, has more than 15 years of experience in events management, human resources and multidisciplinary team management. Mario has an MBA and currently works with the European Commission in Brussels, having worked for 20 years in multinationals. He has started several companies himself and he has many skills, counting on solid experience in marketing management, business development and financial management.

The Business Model

In 2017, between 1st of August and 30th of September, Quinta Alma’s revenue was above 35.000€, which represented an average daily return per tent of 145€. Since then, with the increase of available tents and guests, the revenue was respectively increasing. Their team is composed by a group of international volunteers who come for a cultural and pedagogical exchange during the touristic season to help with daily routines and technical knowledge. Moreover, since they are totally off grid they have few operating costs. They are self sufficient in terms of energy production and their water supplies come from a well located inside the land.

Track Record

Quinta Alma was opened in May 2017 for two trial months before the official opening that ocurred on the 1st of August. During their first year of operation, they had a 90% occupancy rate, with over 350 guests. In less than 4 months, they reached almost 5300 Facebook followers and thousands of views and likes on Instagram.

In September 2017, Quinta Alma’s facilities were composed of 3 safari tents; two with a 4 people capacity and one with 2 people capacity; a communitary kitchen and showers.
