This campaign will be used to fund the installation of solar panels for electricity production in the Social Village of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Borba, a social support complex offering services from kindergarten to nursing homes for the elderly, a community center or a community canteen.

It will be a 109kWp solar photovoltaic installation in one of the biggest buildings Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Borba owns - Quinta da Prata. Borba is a small city in Alentejo, the sunniest region in Portugal. Solar power production in this region is very profitable and not as risky as in different regions.

"Every hour the sun beams more energy onto Earth than it needs to satisfy global energy needs for an entire year."

This project will generate 178,6 MWh a year. As solar power becomes less and less expensive, the better the business case for producing electricity for self-consumption is. Santa Casa is doing this as part of their continuous effort to optimize costs and expenditure.

What is the impact?

Direct:

  • Installation of a new power plant with a total power of 109kW. It is estimated that the plant will produce 178.6 MWh / year, which will avoid the emission of 48 tonnes of CO2 to the atmosphere, which is equivalent to 2 182 trees planted.
  • Moreover, throughout the total possible duration of the power plant, the project will allow the avoidance of 1 200 tonnes of CO2 which corresponds to the CO2 captured by a forest with an area of about 2.5 ha.

About the Promoter

About
Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Borba

The promoter of this project is Santa Casa da Misericordia de Borba, a social support complex based in Portugal offering services from nursing homes for the elderly and a kindergarten, to a community centre and canteenbased.

On the 26th of June of 1379, six Borba inhabitants founded the "Irmandade do Santo Espírito de Nossa Senhora" because they thought the rich must share, voluntarily with those who had less. Their caring culture towards the disease, prisoners and poor led to great support from the population to their principles and values. In 1524, the members from this Irmandade, asked for its conversion in to Misericórdia, founded the Hospital and supported the institution with their own money for several years.

The organization currently has about 100 employees and 500 users who use its 14 spaces (from nurseries, to a kindergarten, places to leisure time activities, day centres, social canteen and a multipurpose pavilion, amongst other things).
