Upperglobal is a shoe factory in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal.

The aim of this campaign is to finance:

A photovoltaic plant with 73 solar panels and a total capacity of 40,88 kWp, expected to generate 64 MWh of clean energy per year, along with an inverter, a support structure and a monitoring system;
A battery for energy storage;
The safe removal of asbestos from the existing roof, its replacement with a new, safer structure for employees, and all associated labour costs.

The solar panels will be installed and maintained by Luz Verde, a company specialising in solar photovoltaic installations.

Qual é o impacto?

Direct

Contribution to the decarbonisation of Portugal, avoiding CO2 emissions: With a total production of clean energy of over 64 MWh per year, the solar plant will avoid the emission of about 2,8 tonnes of CO2 per year. This is equivalent to the CO2 absorption of 129 trees.
Cost reduction for the end customer: decentralized energy production through renewable sources, close to the place of consumption, helps to avoid distribution costs, this being the most competitive option. In addition, the company's lower dependence on the national grid makes it less vulnerable to price fluctuations and tax charges. In addition, by using batteries to store surplus energy, the company can take advantage of green energy even during periods without sunlight.
Improving the health and well-being of staff: the removal of an asbestos roof (asbestos cement cover) at the Factory has direct health benefits for all who attend it. The use of asbestos in buildings has been banned in the European Union since 2005 and its presence has been associated with cases of cancer and other lung diseases, due to the inhalation of its fibers. The removal of asbestos in buildings (roofs, fire doors, pipes, and cisterns) must be performed by technicians and specialized companies so that safety is guaranteed.

Promoting sustainable business: the project developed for Upperglobal is an example of the applicability of solar power for any business, and in this case serves as a benchmark to similar industries, an important step towards sustainability for businesses in Portugal.
