The goal of this campaign is to finance the acquisition and installation of an 11,88kWp photovoltaic system for self-consumption and the replacement of conventional lighting for LED lighting in the São Cristóvão Parish Social Centre, a non-profit institution in Alentejo (Portugal) that provides social services for the elderly and the surrounding communities.

Both the LED system and the solar power plant (consisting of 36 modules of 330 Wp) will allow for significant energy savings in comparison with the current consumption. As solar power becomes less and less expensive, the better the business case for producing electricity for self-consumption, especially in regions with high sun exposure such as Alentejo.

Qual é o impacto?

Direct:

Switching to LED lighting will generate savings of around 53% on current electricity costs (5.445 kWh/year). At the same time, the photovoltaic system for self-consumption will allow for the production of around 52% of the energy consumed locally, accounting for total energy savings of around 25,4MWh per year (the rough equivalent of 9 Portuguese households’ consumption). This corresponds to avoiding the emission of 7 tonnes of CO2 to the atmosphere every year or to planting 305 trees. Moreover, this will allow the institution to invest the savings in improving its social care services.

Centro Social Paroquial de São Cristóvão

O Centro Social Paroquial de São Cristóvão é uma Instituição Particular de Solidariedade Social (IPSS) sem fins lucrativos, localizada em São Cristóvão, Montemor o Novo. Foi fundado em 1997 por iniciativa da Fábrica da Igreja, por decreto do arcebispo da Arquidiocese de Évora. A sua missão é receber, apoiar e garantir o bem-estar, direitos e necessidades das pessoas idosas e das comunidades ao seu redor. A IPPS é composta por três valências: um Lar de Idosos, um Centro de Dia e um Serviço de Apoio Domiciliário. Atualmente, a instituição apoia 36 pessoas no total (20 utentes no Lar de Idosos, 9 utentes em serviço de apoio domiciliário e 7 utentes no centro do dia) e tem 17 funcionários (entre auxiliares, pessoal técnico, um médico, uma enfermeira e uma animadora).
