Vila is a project for a school, which is developing a pedagogical model and an innovative curriculum aiming to contribute to a sustainable and collaborative society. The goal is to provide an educational experience in which children and young people can live creative, committed, and participatory lives and be critically aware of themselves and the world, in a happy and free manner.

Since 2020, Vila has had a class of elementary school children experiencing learning in an urban community in Lisbon with community gardens, agro-forestry, a park, a room, and in public neighbourhood rooms. In order for Vila to be a school, it is required to have a licensed building.

To finance this project, the promoter intends to raise €500.000 through four campaigns with Goparity.

The funds raised through the first three campaigns (Vila - Sustainable School I, II and III) were used to purchase the building to open a sustainable school of reference, to purchase additional land next to the building, and to start the licensing process. The promoter intends at this stage to invest in green outdoor spaces and infrastructure to be placed in the gardens that will allow children to use the space starting next school year and that more children attend Vila.

The funds raised through this fourth campaign will be used to:

Build an open space infrastructure in the gardens.
Rehabilitate the outdoor green spaces of the school's property.
Install solar panels, a compost center, a dry toilet, vegetable gardens and a water reuse system.

The space will provide full schooling for the children already enrolled in the project and welcome many more, including those on the waiting list. Vila aims to cover all education cycles, from kindergarten to high school.

Environmental sustainability, emotions and interpersonal relationships, human rights, gender equality, arts and crafts, multiculturalism, and learning through community projects of social and ecological innovation are curricular pillars to be developed by a multidisciplinary team, gathering as key references practices from Open Learning school, Waldorf pedagogy, Social-Emotional and Ethical Curriculum (SEE Learning), and Green School.

The children who currently attend the Vila in the neighbourhood classrooms will be involved in the coming months in the rehabilitation of the gardens, the creation of ecological systems, and the preparation of the "temple" outside - an open space that will be the heart of the school. This campaign will enable transforming and using the new spaces, opening more vacancies next year.

¿Cuál es el impacto?

Building of an accessible and inclusive school: 500m2 of a building will be renewed to receive the school facilities, with pre-school, 1st and 2nd cycles. Furthermore, there is potential to expand to the 3rd cycle and secondary education.
Access to quality education, collaborative and for sustainability: 150 (first phase up to 2nd cycle) to 300 children and young people (with 3rd cycle and secondary) with access to a pedagogical model focused on project-based learning, with Waldorf and social-emotional and ethical practices, and of social-ecological innovation, with the main pillars of gender equality and human rights, multiculturalism, participation and community. Also, 14 teachers periodically participate in training in social-emotional curriculum, non-violent communication, practices for Learning Communities, Waldorf pedagogy, gender equality, and human rights.
Promotion of equal education: focus on the promotion of Gender Equality as a pillar of pedagogy, and on equality in the choice of professions, areas of interest, life projects, and sport.
Promotion of community empowerment and resilience activities: a community of 3000 people in one school cycle is impacted through extracurricular programs in community gardens and agroforestry. The school curriculum strengthens values of collaboration and sustainability.
Promotion of environmental responsibility: the school implements environmentally responsible practices such as eco-friendly materials, composting, dry toilets, green roofs, water reuse systems, and the use of renewable energy.
Promotion of entrepreneurship and social innovation: the school as a Hub for social and ecological impact projects for real learning contexts.
Job creation: 6 new full-time jobs will be created with the expansion of the school structure, among them head and assistant teachers, and complementary functions to the operation of the school.

Vila representa la voluntad de crear una escuela sostenible en Lisboa, para todos los niveles educativos (hasta el nivel universitario), una oferta innovadora que aún no existe en la ciudad.

Un proyecto que combina la educación para una sociedad sostenible y colaborativa con el desarrollo de las diversas dimensiones del ser humano. Esta escuela se destaca por:

Tener la educación emocional como uno de sus pilares pedagógicos;
Dar sentido a todo aprendizaje en un contexto real;
Adaptarse a las características y motivaciones de cada niño y cada proyecto de vida;
Tener la sostenibilidad ecológica y las prácticas colaborativas presentes en su funcionamiento y aprendizaje;
Promover la educación para la igualdad de género y ser inclusiva.

El proyecto refleja el interés y profundización en pedagogías alternativas y la aspiración de reunir sus mejores propuestas de manera complementaria con un currículo innovador. Detrás de Vila hay una extensa investigación sobre las mejores prácticas en las 50 escuelas más innovadoras del mundo y la experiencia en gestión colaborativa de un proyecto educativo Waldorf para la primera infancia como motor para reunir a las familias y parte del equipo de Vila.

También hay un conjunto de socios locales que han permitido que Vila crezca como un proyecto educativo comunitario integrado en un barrio urbano, que han fortalecido su equipo multidisciplinario y que han brindado una experiencia práctica (desde la propuesta pedagógica) a los niños que asisten a Vila. Siempre con el apoyo y entusiasmo de varias familias que componen la comunidad pionera de esta escuela sostenible.

Para ser estudiante en Vila habrá becas disponibles y la posibilidad de intercambios entre familias y escuelas para la diversificación y democratización del acceso.
