After the two wildfires that occurred in 2017, which destroyed more than 80% of the forest area of Belver (around 540ha), Terras de Guidintesta- Rural Development Society has initiated a partnership with the Forestry Produces Association of Belver Parish to reforest an area, under its management (around 600ha) with a more resilient and sustainable forest in economic and environmental terms.

This funding will serve as a first tranche to initiate the early jobs regarding the final goal which is the reforestation of 600ha.

This area corresponds to more than 1600 properties of rustic buildings of more than 130 small owners who unite to promote the joint management of their properties and therefore overcome the obstacles of smallholding.

With an intervention area of 600ha, located in the parish of Belver in the municipality of Gavião, the project is laying the foundations for multifunctionality, sustainability and biodiversity with a strong connection with the local community. It is promoting not only the reforestation of indigenous species (such as cork tree, arbutus and pine tree), but also a multifunctional way of management where the use of resources is sustainable, promoting the development of economic activity and social impact in the area.

The reforestation of 600ha, through the plantation of around 270.000 trees, is going to absorb around 5940 tons of CO2 per year. The preservation and promotion of wildlife and biodiversity in this area will also be key points for the sustainability of the burnt area. At a social level, this project will enable the development of economic activity capable of promoting local jobs and raising revenue for more than 130 small owners involved in this project, most of them in retirement age, contributing to their financial independence.

La sociedad Terras de Guidintesta, administrada por Carlos Machado, ingeniero ambiental, fue fundada en 2012 para reunir las voluntades de algunos propietarios de la parroquia, que acordaron entregar a esta empresa la gerencia de sus terrenos, comprendiendo cerca de 600 hectáreas, donde será realizada la intervención. La sociedad tiene como actividad económica la producción y comercialización de productos agropecuarios, forestales y apícolas, cría de animales en cautiverio, servicios ligados a la transformación de productos agropecuarios y forestales, así como actividades de turismo rural y turismo natural. La sociedad recibirá cerca de 270 mil árboles, costeados, a través del proyecto “Reforestar Belver”, una iniciativa diseñada en conjunto con la Asociación de Productores Forestales de Belver (APFB). APFB asume el papel de supervisor de la relación entre los propietarios participantes en el proyecto y el promotor del proyecto, siendo simultáneamente la entidad administradora de la Zona de Intervención Forestal (ZIF) de la parroquia de Belver.
