Cosa finanzierai?

Cooperativa Agraria Sangareni is a smallholder coffee cooperative in Pangoa, Junín, bringing together 379 farming families across six communities along the Ene River. Its members cultivate high‑altitude Arabica between 1.000 and 1.900 metres, producing specialty‑grade coffee that the cooperative aggregates, processes, and exports to buyers in Europe and the United States. Production is largely organic, grown under shade, fully georeferenced, and verified as deforestation‑free under the EU Deforestation Regulation.

The cooperative operates with a strong sustainability and certification framework, holding Fairtrade, USDA Organic, EU Organic, and Rainforest Alliance seals. Women represent one‑third of the membership and manage their own Fairtrade organic volumes, including a dedicated line for a German buyer.

This campaign finances the purchase of green coffee during the 2026 harvest season, allowing Sangareni to pay farmers promptly, secure volume at peak production, and meet export commitments while buyers abroad pay weeks after shipment. The funds will be used exclusively to procure coffee from 337 member‑farmers between March and November 2026.

Working capital enables:

  • Timely payments to families, who receive income at delivery without waiting for international buyers to settle invoices.
  • Higher purchasing volume and stronger negotiation, as the cooperative can buy coffee during peak production months and secure export contracts.
  • Income circulating among 379 families across six rural communities, strengthening local economies.
  • A stable supply chain, giving producers a reliable buyer and reducing dependence on intermediaries who pay lower prices.

Beyond its commercial role, Sangareni is actively expanding agroforestry systems. Through a partnership with Fairtrade Latin America (CLAC) and Darboven, it has committed to planting 300.000 shade trees between 2024 and 2029, reinforcing biodiversity and long‑term climate resilience. Its full georeferencing and satellite‑based monitoring (Satelligence) confirm that all plots are free from post‑2020 deforestation, positioning the cooperative ahead of regulatory requirements and strengthening its access to European markets.

Sangareni’s model supports smallholder livelihoods, protects forest landscapes, and ensures that high‑quality Peruvian Arabica reaches premium markets under fair, transparent, and sustainable conditions. It is a cooperative that not only exports coffee; it sustains communities, strengthens local economies, and builds long‑term environmental resilience.

Qual è l'impatto?

Improving financial health of food producers: by aggregating 379 member-farmers (of which 126 women) who cultivate approximately 1,367 hectares of specialty Arabica coffee across the Pangoa area, CA Sangareni syndicates all producers under one production standard, assuring quality and quantity, and allowing its producers to negotiate directly with important worldwide importers with a single voice. The cooperative operates its own drying and processing facilities in Pangoa and works with two Fairtrade-certified subcontracted plants (Industrias MB Los Inkas and Corporación de Productores Café Peru S.A.C.), giving members access to infrastructure and services that would be harder to finance individually allowing for economies of scale.

CA Sangareni’s Fairtrade certification contractually obliges the cooperative to pay member-producers the greater of the Fairtrade Minimum Price or the prevailing market price, plus an organic differential and the Fairtrade Premium - shielding producers from downside price volatility regardless of how the New York “C” futures market moves.

The Fairtrade Premium component is invested in the development of the cooperatives operations. For 2026 the plan includes: 40% toward economic development (price competitiveness and certification costs), 26% toward productivity (organic fertilizer for members), 20% toward infrastructure (drying-yard and drying-yard lighting) and 14% toward education and training.

This financing will enable the integration of 25 new associates.

Ensure equal opportunities for women participation in the agricultural sector: CA Sangareni maintains an ongoing partnership with GIZ (German Cooperation), through which demonstration plots and technical internships are implemented specifically for women members, aimed at strengthening their productive capacities and economic autonomy. In addition, within the 2026 Fairtrade Premium Plan of Use, the education and training line includes specific funding for the activities of the cooperative's Women's Committee.

Promote the creation of fair work opportunities for all: the financing will support job creation. The internal team is projected to grow by 20% by the end of 2026, equivalent to 2 new direct jobs lasting between 6 and 12 months, with the forecast of becoming permanent posts after 12 months as operations consolidate.

Promotion of sustainable production methods: CA Sangareni holds a differentiated, active certification portfolio for the 2025/2026 cycle: Fairtrade; Organic NOP for the US market; Organic EU and Peru’s national organic standard. These certifications translate into concrete field practices: shade management, a ban on synthetic agrochemicals, protection of water sources and integrated pest management.

The cooperative is also implementing a reforestation and agroforestry program, with 30,000 forest seedlings planned for distribution in the 2026 campaign to restore degraded land and reinforce tree cover, alongside the conservation of 573.05 ha of forest and natural reserve that act as climate buffers.
